INFORMATION REGARDING OPEN POSITIONS ON CALIFORNIA DESERT DISTRICT ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is soliciting nominations for five positions on its District Advisory Council (DAC) for the 2001-2003 three-year term, which would begin January 1, 2001. The five positions to be filled include two public-at-large representatives, an elected official representing local or county government, one renewable resources representative, and one environmental protection representative. Council members serve three-year terms and may be nominated for reappointment for an additional three-year term. All five members are completing their second 3-year term and are not eligible for reappointment.
The DAC is comprised of 15 private individuals who represent different interests and advise BLM officials on policies and programs concerning the management of 10 million acres of public land in Southern California. The Council meets in formal session three to four times each year in various locations throughout the California Desert District. Council members serve without compensation except for reimbursement of travel expenditures incurred in the course of their duties.
Any group or individual may nominate a qualified person for any position, based upon their education, training, knowledge, or experience. Nominations must include the name of the nominee; work and home addresses and telephone numbers; a biographical sketch that includes the nominee's work, public service record; any applicable outside interests that qualify him or her for the position and the specific category of interest in which the nominee is best qualified to offer advice and counsel to BLM. Council membership is to be balanced in terms of points of view and functions to be performed. The BLM also tries to balance the Council geographically. The California Desert District covers portions of eight counties, and includes 10 million acres of public land in the California Desert Conservation Area and 300,000 acres of scattered parcels in San Diego, western Riverside, western San Bernardino, Orange, and Los Angeles Counties.
All nominees must include letters of reference from represented interests, organizations, or elected officials supporting the nomination to the Council. If you are nominating yourself, the BLM needs at least one letter of recommendation. Advisory Council members are appointed by the Secretary of the Interior, generally by late January or early February.
Nominations for the DAC must be submitted to the BLM District Manager, California Desert District, by August 31, 2000.
